Welcome! Today, I gush over my some of my favorite humor books. These are wonderfully written, incredibly clever, and all kinds of fun! I totally love them, and I hope you will too.
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling
In the past few years, Mindy Kaling has shot to super stardom, starring in, not to mention producing and writing, movies and television shows. This is her first book, written when she was just an obscure writer/actor/producer on The Office. If you haven’t read this book, you’re going to want to stop wasting time reading my blog and start reading it. It’s one of the funniest, most endearing books ever. Mindy writes hilarious anecdotes about her childhood, her love of comedy, her time in New York City, her career and big breaks. She also includes fun little essays about guys, friends, cupcakes, and karaoke. Mindy is so funny and spunky you’ll read this book and end up wishing she was your best friend.
Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling
Sorry, more Mindy. I can’t get enough of her! Her second book is just as hilarious and fun as her first. By now she is creating, producing, and staring in her own television show, The Mindy Project (amazing show, by the way). She writes about acting in love scenes, having fun misadventures in dating, and getting to do cool, glam-it-up stuff because she’s a celebrity. I’ve read both her books a billion times because they’re so upbeat and funny.
The Know It All by A. J. Jacobs
In the year 2002, before Wikipedia overtook the reference world, a journalist named A. J. Jacobs embarked on a quest: read the Encyclopedia Britannica, all 32 volumes, alllll 33,000 pages, A to Z. If that sounds dull, it’s anything but. A.J. writes about the information he’s learning, but also weaves in gut-busting autobiographical bits, such as: posing nude for Esquire, embarrassing himself on national TV, mistaking Alex Trebek for a Mexican gardener. Read this book and you’ll not only learn some hilarious facts about the world, but also some hilarious facts about the man himself, A. J. Jacobs.
Someone Will Be With You Shortly by Lisa Kogan
You’ve probably never heard of Lisa Kogan. I first encountered her in the pages of O, The Oprah Magazine, where she writes fun and witty columns. When I discovered she wrote a book, I ordered it right away, and, of course, absolutely loved it. Kogan writes about motherhood, romance, long-distance relationships, sugar cravings, the after-effects of bad haircuts. She pretty much covers it all. Plus you’ll get a glimpse of what it’s like to work for a magazine, Oprah’s no less. The book is insightful and filled with lots of fun and witty humor.
Food: A Love Story by Jim Gaffigan
Jim Gaffigan is the comedian best known for his Hot Pockets routine. But Hot Pockets are not the only food Gaffigan has the talent to poke fun at. This book is insanely funny. Never have I laughed so much while reading. I devoured it in a few days, then was sad and sorry it was over. He covers every single food ever (pizza, oysters, fries, gravy, guacamole…). I was in awe that he comes up with so many funny things to say about so many different kinds of food. I can pretty much guarantee this book will make you laugh.
That’s it—five fun books to read right now. What are your favorite humor books? Let us know below!
