What a wonderful book! This is the first picture book I’ve recommended on my blog, but it’s just so good, I had to do it! The story is so deep, so rich, so enjoyable—and totally absorbing. I mean, how often does a children’s book blow you away? This one blew me away.
The story is about a little girl named Sulwe who is teased for the color of her skin. Her mom, dad, sister, even her classmates are light-skinned, which makes Sulwe unhappy with her darker complexion. But, then, thanks to a shooting star and a magical journey, she learns to love the “midnight color” of her skin and to embrace her inner and outer beauty.
Why I love It:
- It’s beautifully written with rich imagery and a lyrical quality that sings.
- It’s heartbreaking but also heartwarming. I got choked up the first time I read it.
- It has an empowering message of self-acceptance and self-love.
- It includes the mythological story of day and night. I’m a huge mythology fan, so this was just an added bonus in a book I was already loving.
- Vashti Harrison’s illustrations are beyond beautiful. Stunning, absolutely gorgeous!
This is a great book to inspire children (and adults!) to celebrate diversity and celebrate themselves.
