Fresh foods are fantastic: They provide vitamins and minerals—and they taste delicious. But sometimes frozen is the better option. Frozen foods last longer, stay fresher, and still taste delicious (as long as you don’t leave them in the freezer too long). So here are four frozen foods that I declare winners in the fresh versus frozen debate!

Diced Avocado

Do you lie awake at night worrying about your avocados? Are they ripe yet? Overripe and mushy? Brown and funky? Overcome your avocado anxiety by buying frozen avocado chunks. Toss them on your salads, tacos, clubs. The only caveat is that you’ll have to set them out for about 30 minutes to defrost. Because of this (and my laziness), I use them primarily for smoothies since I can toss the frozen chunks straight into the blender. Nifty things, I’m telling ya!

Asparagus

This first-class veggie is low-carb and highly nutritious. Yet, fresh asparagus is hard to keep fresh in the fridge. Leftovers go limp and get squishy and stringy. For optimal freshness, buy frozen. The spears defrost quickly whether baked or sautéed.

Riced Cauliflower

Thanks to the keto craze, everyone is flipping out over cauliflower. It pops up in everything from pizza crusts to buffalo bites. Riced cauliflower makes a great side or substitute for rice or pasta. But unless you’re going to eat it all up in one day, buy it frozen. Riced cauliflower lasts only a day or two in the fridge before it gets all smelly and slimy. The perfect place for it is the freezer. Pour out what you need, and the rest stays fresh. Saute it with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper. Yum!

Salmon

Long ago, I decided to run through my entire life savings by buying salmon. It’s so freaking expensive–but practically every dietitian tells you to eat it. It’s the fountain of youth or something. Go large and buy the jumbo pack of wild sockeye filets at Whole Foods (or anywhere else you can find them). It’s not cheap, but it can be tough to find fresh, wild sockeye salmon when you want it, so it’s worth the money. I mean what good is that life savings doing you anyway?
