When I’m not writing, my favorite thing to do is . . . procrastinate about writing. Sometimes I stare into space, but other times I’ll do something productive, like read blogs. As such, I put together a list of my favorite blogs for writers. Looking for writing tips? Advice? Inspiration? General awesomeness? Look no further! These blogs have it all!

Bryn Donovan
In addition to blogging about writing, Bryn loads her site with tons of freebies. You’ll find writing prompts, exercises, worksheets, and master lists that cover everything from facial expressions to cozy mystery settings. There’s even a scary-music playlist to get you in the mood to write horror (if that’s your thing). Although the site is geared toward fiction writers, writers of nonfiction can benefit from the site’s self-help vibe, with articles about finding work/life balance, indulging in positive self-talk, and feeling forever young (Yes, please!). Bryn gives you a little bit of everything and lots of great advice.

Helping Writers Become Authors
K.M. Weiland’s award-winning blog is an all-you-can-eat writing buffet. We’re talking lots and lots of variety here. Her blog includes articles about outlining novels, structuring scenes, and storytelling dos and don’ts. I especially love the “Story Structure Database” where she breaks down plot points of famous books, movies, short stories, and even video games. You can read articles, download free ebooks, listen to her podcast. The list goes on and on.

Kibin Blog
Okay, here’s something a little different. Their mission statement is “to help students become better writers.” While the blog is mostly about writing academic essays, much of the advice applies to all types of writing. I especially love the articles about improving sentence variety and writing attention-grabbing lines. Students who are required to write essays will no doubt benefit from this site, but so will writers of all genres. The articles are fun, approachable, and full of helpful tips and techniques. Plus, the bloggers have a sense of humor, which makes the posts extra fun to read.

Jerry Jenkins
Gotta love Jerry! The NY Times Bestselling author of almost 200 books, including the Left Behind series, Jerry Jenkins knows his stuff, and he’s willing to share it. His blog includes helpful articles, daily writing exercises, free writing guides, recommendations for writing software, and also a bunch of posts on world building, outlining, and character development. Don’t get left behind—check it out!

Write It Sideways
You can browse this blog by topic, such as fiction, nonfiction, inspiration, productivity, the business of writing, and more. The site features hundreds of diverse articles about all things writing and reading. Some of my faves: “My Kindle Broke. And I’m Not Buying a New One,” “Serial Comma Drama: Which Side Are You On,” and “3 Steps to Fixing an Annoying Protagonist.” You’re practically guaranteed to find something to inspire you!

So there you have it: a sweet lil list of the best writing blogs. What did I miss? What are your go-tos? Let us know below!

  1. Thanks for this fantastic list. I can so relate about the daydreaming about writing issue. I think about it a lot but that’s about it.

I really like the way you laid out your resources and formatted the text. Very clear to read.
